Scott Allen Powell, age 48, of Portland, passed away Saturday, July 24, 2010, at his home. He was born May 27, 1962, in Marion, Ind. He is the son of Darl L. Powell, deceased, and Julia (Dodson) Smithee .  He was employed as a builder.  He served in the U.S. Army as an E-1. He is survived by his wife, Lapellya (Cook) Powell; mother, Julia (Bob) Smithee of Fairmont, Ind.; daughters, Samantha Sparks of Fairmont, Ind., Crystal Powell of Portland; sons, Nathan Smith of Madison, Tenn., Timothy Smith of Cross Plains, Tenn.; sisters, Ann (Randy) Lee, Vicky (Todd) Veetor, Dione (Mike) Winslow; brothers, Tony (Maroou) Powell, B-Ray (Pam) Powell, Doug (Susan) Powell, Joe (Shelia) Rkouffe, Glen (Billie) Powell, Chris Powell; stepmother, Doris Powell of Portland; eight grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his grandmother, Audrey Gordon; brothers, Darl Powell, Jr., and Donnie Powell. Visitation is after 8:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 27, 2010.  Funeral service is 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at Portland Funeral Chapel with Bro. Clint Barnes officiating. Interment is 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at Veterans Cemetery, Nashville, Tenn. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Scott Allen Powell Burial Fund, c/o Portland Funeral Chapel, 610 N. Broadway St., Portland, TN 37148.
Cecil D. West, age 86, passed away Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at Skyline Medical Center. He was born May 27, 1924, in Franklin, Ky. He is the son of James Ellis and Ora (Dawson) West, both deceased. He was a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II in Europe with the 3rd Army and 4th Armored Division, and the 37th Tank Battalion, under General Patton. He is survived by his sons, David West of Nashville, Tenn., James (Melody) West of Fithian, Ill., Joe West of LaVergne, Tenn., William Terry (Beverly) West of Goodlettsville, Tenn.; brothers, Melvin (Helen) West of Hendersonville, Tenn., Vernon (Alice) West of Portland; grandchildren, Matthew (Kim) West, Sara (Richard) Hardin, Jenna Cox, Brent (Toni) West, Nathan, Eric, Michael, Tyler and Alex West; great-grandchildren, Matthew West, Jackson West, Sam Hardin, Jillian Cox, Bryce Cox, Caroline West, Bryce West and Hailey West. He is preceded in death by his wife, Emma Cage West; son, Randy West; brother, Robert West; sister, Betty Wilkinson. Visitation is 4 p.m., until 8 p.m., Friday, July 23, 2010, 4 p.m., until 8 p.m., Saturday, and after 11:30 a.m., Sunday.  Funeral service is 2 p.m., Sunday, July 25, 2010, at Portland Funeral Chapel with Bro. Richard Patton officiating. Interment is at Maple Hill Cemetery.  Pallbearers are grandsons. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
